Nesting Biology of Sympatric Species of Megachilidae Bees in a Conservation Area in Brazilian Atlantic Forest

Megachilidae bees are important pollinators in the Neotropical region, however information on the ecology and behavior of these species is still scarce. The objective of this study was to analyze the nesting biology of sympatric species in the União Biological Reserve, a remnant of Atlantic Forest in the southeastern Brazil. Our results indicated the occurrence of 17 species, representing significant richness compared to other areas in the Atlantic Forest. Five sympatric species built ¾ of all nests found and the architecture of their nests was studied including, for the first time, nests of a species of Megachile (Ptilosarus). The use of petals or leaf fragments in the construction of the nests was observed for species of Megachile (Chrysosarus), confirming previous data. The nesting activity period in the trap-nests occurred mainly in the rainy season, with different peaks among the species. The results indicate that the distinctive characteristics of the species, such as the type of material used in the nests, the dimensions of cavities, and the asynchronous nesting period, could be important for the niche differentiation of these sympatric species, allowing the maintenance and the survival of the most abundant Megachilidae populations in the area

Equações não lineares para determinar a curva de crescimento de suínos imunocastrados

The objective of this work was to compare the performance of the nonlinear Gompertz, logistic, and von Bertalanffy equations, to describe the growth curve of immunocastrated male pigs from birth until reaching 140 kg body weight. Standard error, number of iterations, mean square of the error, and coefficient of determination were compared between the models. The logistic and von Bertalanffy equations do not accurately estimate the initial and slaughter weights. The Gompertz equation shows the highest reliability and is, therefore, the most suitable one to describe the growth curve of immunocastrated pigs from birth until 140 kg body weight is reached.O objetivo deste trabalho foi comparar o desempenho das equações não lineares de Gompertz, logística e a de von Bertalanffy, para descrever a curva de crescimento de suínos machos imunocastrados, desde o nascimento até atingirem 140 kg de massa corporal. O erro-padrão, o número de iterações, o quadrado médio do erro e o coeficiente de determinação foram comparados entre os modelos. A equação logística e a de von Bertalanffy não estimam com precisão as massas inicial e de abate. A equação de Gompertz apresenta maior confiabilidade e é, portanto, a mais adequada para descrever a curva de crescimento de suínos imunocastrados, desde o nascimento até a obtenção de140 kg de massa corporal

Cinema, juventude e ruralidades: formação crítica e educação geográfica no meio rural

The objective of this article is to present and discuss the project Cinema,Youth and Ruralities: cultural activities for young people from rural settlements,carried out as a University Extension project by the Center forResearch and Agrarian and Environmental Studies (cpea), of the Facultyof Philosophy and Sciences of the Paulista State University. The projectoffers thematic training workshops that address the environmentalissue and field education from film and photography, based on the localcontext, for young people settled in the municipality of Promesa in SãoPaulo. It integrates a major project, financed by the cnpq, with a durationof two years. In the first year, workshops were held that addressedthe technical aspects of multimedia languages, the critical analysis offilms and videos that represent life in the field and the discussion of ruraleducation concepts and the environmental issue. In the second year,thematic workshops will be held to consider the environmental issueand the production of videos and photo exhibitions by the students.The aim is to stimulate, through the workshops, the look of the youngparticipants in the environmental theme and to record, through imagesand videos, experiences of the place where they live. The objective proposedfor this article is to describe the stages of the proex extensionproject and to analyze the activities developed on the subject of fieldeducation and environmental practices.El objetivo de este artículo es presentar y discutir el proyecto Cine, Juventud y Ruralidades: actividades culturales para jóvenes de asentamientos rurales, realizado como proyecto de Extensión Universitaria por el Centro de Investigaciones y Estudios Agrarios y Ambientales (cpea), de la Facultad de Filosofía y Ciencias de la Universidad Estatal Paulista. El proyecto ofrece talleres temáticos de formación que abordan la cuestión ambiental y la educación del campo a partir del cine y la fotografía, con base en el contexto local, para jóvenes asentados en el municipio de Promesa en São Paulo. Integra un proyecto mayor, financiado por el CNPq, con una duración de dos años. En el primer año se realizaron talleres que abordaron los aspectos técnicos de los lenguajes multimedios, el análisis crítico de películas y vídeos que representan la vida en el campo y la discusión de los conceptos de educación rural y la cuestión ambiental. En el segundo año se desarrollarán talleres temáticos que contemplen la cuestión ambiental y la producción de vídeos y exposiciones de fotografías por parte de los educandos. Se pretende estimular, a través de los talleres, la mirada de los jóvenes participantes al tema medioambiental y registrar por medio de imágenes y vídeos experiencias del lugar en el que viven. Alterações comportamentais em crianças portadoras de enfermidades crônicas e suas repercussões na família: Hospital da Criança – Obras Sociais de Irmã Dulce, Salvador, BA

It is a pilot study, involving 15 children that were commited at the Hospital da Criança: Obras Sociais de Irmã Dulce, Salvador, Bahia. The objective of this study is the investigation of family’s perception about the pediatric patient with chronic illness. The responsible for the patient answered a questionnaire that approached subjects regarding the partner demographic profile, family  knowledge degree about the disease, behavior alterations in child and its family, besides the impression of prognostic and  the medical services that were offered to the researched population. The results evidenced that some kind of behavior alteration were presented by all evaluated population, being more frequent symptoms of: sadness; anxiety; isolation and sleepness. The parents referred that after the appearance of the disease, the more common manifestations were: increase of the familiar union, feeling of fear, anxiety and concern with physical sequels. Regarding the model of hospital care, it was revealed that they were satisfied with the quality and efficiency of the medical service. However, they consider insufficient the psychological support to the child and the family throughout the confrontation of the chronic disease. The next phase of this study should make possible a more consistent and inclusive analysis concerning the proposed theme.Trata-se de um estudo piloto que envolve 15 crianças internadas no Hospital da Criança: Obras Sociais de Irmã Dulce, Salvador, Bahia, realizado com o objetivo de investigar a percepção da família perante o paciente pediátrico, portador de enfermidade crônica. Para tanto, o responsável pelo paciente respondeu a um questionário que abordou questões referentes a perfil sociodemográfico, grau de conhecimento da família em relação à doença, percepção quanto a alterações comportamentais ocorridas na criança e na família, além da impressão quanto ao prognóstico e serviços médicos prestados à população pesquisada. Os resultados desta pesquisa evidenciaram que toda a população avaliada apresentou algum tipo de alteração comportamental, sendo mais freqüentes os sintomas: tristeza, ansiedade, isolamento e sonolência. Os pais referiram como manifestações mais comuns, após o surgimento da doença: maior união familiar, sentimento de medo, ansiedade e preocupação com seqüelas físicas. No que diz respeito ao padrão de assistência hospitalar, revelaram-se satisfeitos com a qualidade e eficiência do serviço médico prestado. Entretanto, consideram insuficiente o suporte psicológico à criança e à família no enfrentamento da doença crônica. A próxima fase deste estudo deverá possibilitar uma análise mais consistente e abrangente acerca do tema proposto

Apresentação Dossiê “O Urbanismo e Porto Alegre”   No Brasil, o emprego da palavra Urbanismo é problemático. Ela abriga diferentes significados, sempre associados a diferentes formas de ação sobre a cidade. Afinal, o Urbanismo trata do desenho arquitetônico da cidade? Ou do planejamento e gestão do uso do solo urbano? É um domínio profissional exclusivo de arquitetos e urbanistas? Ou um espaço de convergência de múltiplas profissões? Em Porto Alegre, o Urbanismo é campo de saberes e fazeres que foi se afirmando ao longo dos séculos XIX e XX a partir de iniciativas as mais diversas. São célebres as experiências iniciadas nos ambientes que tiveram: juízes régios atuando no ordenamento urbano da Porto Alegre colonial, Código de Postura Municipal de construções de 1897,  Plano Geral de Melhoramentos de 1914,   Planos Diretores de 1958 e 1979, Plano Diretor de Desenvolvimento Urbano e Ambiental de 1999; Personagens como Otávio Rocha, Edvaldo Pereira Paiva, Luiz Arthur Ubatuba de Farias, Demétrio Ribeiro; O curso de Urbanismo, oferecido pelo Instituto de Belas Artes entre 1947 e 1949; dentre diversos artistas e escritores que retrataram a cidade em suas obras. Para marcar a data comemorativa do aniversário de 250 anos da cidade de Porto Alegre, pretendemos, com esta chamada, explorar a construção da cidade, do Urbanismo e do Planejamento Urbano, a partir da experiência porto-alegrense. Os artigos aqui reunidos representam uma pequena amostra da diversidade de abordagens e perspectivas atualmente em debate no campo. Vão desde a historiografia urbana da cidade de Porto Alegre até a exploração de possíveis cenário de planejamento urbano pós-pandemia; da memória de bairros e lugares até a sociabilidade pública. O leitor encontrará, portanto, um amplo rol de temas, pesquisas e reflexões. Esperamos que o presente dossiê contribua com a reflexão e a compreensão dos fenômenos da cidade contemporânea.             Além dos artigos do dossiê, a revista também festeja os demais artigos recebidos pelo edital e que ora são publicados. Pervasive gaps in Amazonian ecological research

Biodiversity loss is one of the main challenges of our time,1,2 and attempts to address it require a clear un derstanding of how ecological communities respond to environmental change across time and space.3,4 While the increasing availability of global databases on ecological communities has advanced our knowledge of biodiversity sensitivity to environmental changes,5–7 vast areas of the tropics remain understudied.8–11 In the American tropics, Amazonia stands out as the world’s most diverse rainforest and the primary source of Neotropical biodiversity,12 but it remains among the least known forests in America and is often underrepre sented in biodiversity databases.13–15 To worsen this situation, human-induced modifications16,17 may elim inate pieces of the Amazon’s biodiversity puzzle before we can use them to understand how ecological com munities are responding. To increase generalization and applicability of biodiversity knowledge,18,19 it is thus crucial to reduce biases in ecological research, particularly in regions projected to face the most pronounced environmental changes. We integrate ecological community metadata of 7,694 sampling sites for multiple or ganism groups in a machine learning model framework to map the research probability across the Brazilian Amazonia, while identifying the region’s vulnerability to environmental change. 15%–18% of the most ne glected areas in ecological research are expected to experience severe climate or land use changes by 2050.
